Junior swimmers finish strokes ahead in their latest swim meet At the conclusion of Term 1 the Junior BIS Barracudas were invited to express their interest in becoming the Junior BIS Barracuda Swimming Captains.

At the conclusion of Term 1 the Junior BIS Barracudas were invited to express their interest in becoming the Junior BIS Barracuda Swimming Captains. To apply for this position, the students were required to write a letter outlining why they would be a good leader of the BIS Barracudas. Mr Vinh Nguyen, Mr Phil Husband and myself carefully read the letters and cast our votes.

As a result, Nhat Minh Nguyen and Alex Schultz were selected as the Junior BIS Barracuda Male and Female Captains. Both students were selected by their outstanding applications and demonstration of leadership skills.

Alex and Nhat Minh had their first opportunity to lead the Junior team at a friendly meet with AIS on Thursday 24th January.

The meet was an excellent opportunity for our students to practice their racing skills prior to our BIS Invitational meet in February. 56 Barracudas took advantage of this opportunity and participated in the meet with 60 AIS students.

Students could participate in 3 individual events and a relay. The events on offer included 100 IM, 25m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly, 25m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay.

The Barracudas represented the team well in the 100m IM. Ben Campbell placed 3rd overall and second in the 9 – 10 boys. Nhat Minh Nguyen placed 1st in his age category, 11 – 12 boys. Arthur Kenyon-Butler (7 – 8 boys) and Darren Shen (6 and under) also finished 1st in their age category. Alex Schulz (9 – 10 girls), Ena Ohashi (7 – 8 girls) and Caitlin Chua (11 – 12 girls) also placed 1st in their age group.

The next event was the 25m Freestyle. In this event BIS placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall; Zhen Yang Chew, Edward Burden and WonJon Shim. The following students finishing 1st in their age and gender category; Zhen Yang Chew (11 – 12 boys), Edward Burden (9 – 10 boys) and Arthur Kenyon – Butler (7 – 8 boys).

Terra Kwon (11 – 12 boys), Sao Mai Pham (7 – 8 girls), Quynh An Vu (11 – 12 girls) and Nathan Tran (6 and under boys) all placed 1st in their age category for the 50m Butterfly. This was an outstanding event for BIS Barracudas, with many students achieving Personal Best times.

After a week of focusing on breaststroke kick in training, we had two winners from our Pre Squad in the 25m breaststroke; Darren Shen and Anna Thuy Berg. Ena Ohashi was the overall winning girl and 1st place in the 7 – 8 girls. Ingrid Mah (9 – 10 girls), Zhen Yang Chew (11 – 12 boys) and Akilan Pandian (7 – 8 boys) also won their category in 25m breaststroke.

The 100m freestyle event saw BIS take 1st, 2nd and 3rd position; Ben Campbell, Hugo Mora Asenjo and Nhat Minh Nguyen. All three boys also achieved personal best times. Soa Mai Pham (7 – 8 girls) was the overall winning girl and 1st place in her category. Quynh Anh Vu (11 – 12 girls) also placed 1st in her age category.

The 50m backstroke was the most popular event of the meet, with 58 students competing. Samaira Gupta was the overall winning girl and 1st place in her age category. Sao Mai Pham placed 1st in the 7 – 8 girls. Akilan Pandian was 1st place in the 7 – 8 boys category. Nathan Tran and Anna Thuy Berg placed 1st in the 6 and under age category.
