BIS Mission Statement and Values in Action 2021 Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Aristotle

Mission statement

As a school, we are constantly looking forward, always striving to do better, aiming for excellence.  To achieve this, we need to have a shared understanding of what excellence looks like in all areas of the school. To this end, reflection is important. Reflection on who we are a school, what we are doing well, what we can do better and the routes we will take to achieve this.

Over the last 12 months, we have been reflecting as a school community.  We have looked at our Mission Statement specifically.  We want our Mission Statement to be a true reflection of who we are as a school, to ensure that it reflects our community, our values and what we strive to be. This needs to be clear so we can achieve excellence.

To demonstrate excellence, you need to be specific about what you are aiming for in a practical and tangible sense. In schools, we can define excellence against a set of values and outcomes that students and the wider school community strive to achieve.  At BIS, our Mission and thus our values and outcomes refer to the following areas;

  • The culture of our school - our values and beliefs as outlined in our Aide Memoire
  • Learning and teaching and the academic outcomes we strive for
  • Wellbeing for the whole school community
  • An understanding of who we are in our local and global setting
  • Our wider learning beyond the curriculum and the part we play in our community

In consultation with students, teachers and parents, we reviewed our Mission Statement. Did it accurately reflect the above points?  It was clear that our Mission Statement was not an accurate reflection of how the school had evolved, grown and changed to meet the needs of students and wider school community. In line with Nord Anglia Education, recommendations from our British Schools Overseas (BSO) and Council of International Schools(CIS) reviews, we set about updating our Mission Statement and creating our BIS Values in Action to accurately reflect who we are as a school and ensure all of our BIS Community have a shared understanding of our values, our beliefs ultimately; our Mission and Vision.

As such we are delighted to share our revised School Mission Statement and the new BIS Values In Action that have been created in consultation with teachers, students, parents and support staff and that we believe truly reflect who we are as a school community.
