WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AND INTERNSHIPS

What if your child could learn to write a resume, find and interview for a job, and work in a professional environment all before their third year of high school? At British International School of Boston, they can do all of this.

Preparing for the Future

At our independent, private school in Boston, we create several opportunities to make sure that your child is ready for college and their future career. One such opportunity is through encouraging our High School students to take part in summer internships or work experience. We have students in all High School year groups taking part in this, yet it is particularly recommended for Year 11 students once they have completed their examinations.

Some families choose to source their own work experience and internship opportunities for the Summer break. However, we are poised to support through linking our students to professional organisations within the Boston community, which span a broad selection of careers. We also have a large portion of our BISB parent body who support student internships, work experience, and even discussions regarding college pathways and course choices.

Our program ensures your child builds key professional skills and helps them refine their university and professional goals, before they graduate from high school.

Looking Ahead to College

Work Experience and/or internships are invaluable because students learn about different industries, see the relevance of school subjects in the world of work, and gain greater self-confidence and maturity. It also helps in making more informed decisions about future careers and helps students in making more appropriate university choices for their interests.

In past years, our students have worked at medical research laboratories, top Boston hospitals and medical centres, advertising and marketing agencies, a recording studio, financial management institutions, and more. We encourage students to explore an industry that interests them, and many make connections that extend far beyond the end of their two-week internship — continuing to work with a company over summer breaks and even during college.

Learning the Process

As an independent, private school in Boston, we're proud to support our students in gaining a work experience placement or internship that encourages students to begin to understand the fields and industries they could be interested in pursuing.

Within our High School holistic provision and within IB Activities, students also spend time learning to write resumes and cover letters, learning how to call and inquire about work placements at local companies, and also how to gain key interview skills. We empower our students to find and confirm their own work placements, supported by school staff as needed.

Throughout their work experience, students will:

CREATE THE FUTURE

Whether they’re local to Boston or have moved from another country, our students excel in and beyond the classroom, because they know how to tap into what personally drives them. BISB students carve out their own pathways to their bright future — no matter what they choose to be or do in life.
