What are Welcome Wednesdays?

Welcome Wednesdays are an opportunity for families to learn more about BISB and explore our programs from Toddlers through High School. Students, parents/guardians, and visitors are all welcome to attend.Each visit includes a guided tour, where you can see our classrooms and community in action and gain a firsthand understanding of the BISB learning environment.Tours begin at 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM and last approximately one hour. Welcome Wednesdays take place on the first and third Wednesday of each month through the end of May.These events are designed to help families get a feel for our school and decide if BISB is the right fit for them.

What are the benefits of attending a Welcome Wednesdays event?

There are many benefits to attending a British International School of BostonWelcome Wednesdaysevent. During your visit, you will: Experience a guided tour of our campus and see our classrooms and community in action. Get a feel for our learning environment and school culture. Learn more about our programs, from Toddlers through High School. Gain insight into our curriculum and approach to teaching and learning. When do your Welcome Wednesdays events take place?

Welcome Wednesdays take place on the first and third Wednesday of each month through the end of May.Tours begin at 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM and last approximately one hour.If these times don’t work for you, we also offer private tours and Virtual Discovery Meetings, which can be scheduled at a time that suits your family. You can also reach out to our Admissions Team with any questions.

What if I can’t attend a Welcome Wednesdays event on the dates available?

Do I need to register for a Welcome Wednesdays event?

Yes, we kindly ask that you reserve your place in advance. The easiest way to do this is through our online RSVP form.

What can we expect on the day of the event?

Families are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early to check in and get settled. Tours begin promptly at 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM, each lasting one hour and including visits to classrooms and school facilities. At the end of the tour, families will have the opportunity to sign up for a parent meeting at a later date.

CIRCLE TIME

We start our day by gathering on our classroom’s carpet, connecting with each other. We sing a song and go through the day’s schedule, which includes many adventures!

The outdoors is a place to learn and connect with nature. During our weekly Forest School, we have exciting hands-on lessons that stimulate us through many different activities and interactive experiences.

MATH LESSONS

When we learn math, we work in two small groups, where one group practices the math of our grade level and the other goes into greater depth with higher-level math. This way, our teachers individualize our learning based on our own pace and level of challenge.

SPECIALIST LESSONS

We take exciting classes with specialist teachers in music, dance, and a language — either Spanish or French. Our dance lessons include techniques from the famous Juilliard School of performing arts. All lessons build our skills and talents.

We take a midday break over a 30-minute, healthy lunch, as we can catch up with friends. Afterward, over recess, we get outside for 35 minutes of movement!

Following the UK curriculum in science, our lessons prompt us to explore lots of things about animals, as we do practical experiments and learn how to research. We’re always stimulated by the projects and challenges that come from the experts at MIT.

A LOCAL FIELD TRIP

We’re always looking to apply what we’re learning in the classroom to the world beyond. If we’re exploring money in math class and health through the IPC, for example, our teacher will take us on a scavenger hunt in our local grocery store to purchase fruit and make nutritious snacks.

After school, we can complete homework together or read and rest in a quiet area. We may also choose to participate in clubs like chess, yoga, martial arts, or afternoon sports.

CRITICAL THINKING IN ENGLISH

In English class, while we’re studying Shakespeare’s The Tempest, we not only read the text carefully, but also focus on using critical literary analysis during our written assignments.

In the calm environment of art class, we’ll use acrylic paint to sketch out and then paint in detail “still life” objects arranged throughout the studio. We’re challenged to really see and represent what’s in front of us — using color, shape, tone, and texture.

SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

When we’re in our science lab, using the pH scale, we’ll work together to explore the difference between an acid and an alkali. We’ll discuss neutralization and some of its applications, then present our findings to the rest of our group.

In Physical Education, we’ll prepare for a game of basketball by running through drills on defensive strategy. Once we’re in a game scenario, we confidently block our opponents and react quickly to offensive bursts.

When we use algebra in math class, we solve linear equations with fractions — in the form of an investigation. After working in small groups, we present our solutions to the whole class group.

We’ll work in pairs in Computer Science, using the colorful, free, open-source software “Blockly” to create our own programs — kind of like building scaffolding that gets more and more complex. By the end of the unit, we finish our “building” and publish our own app!

MEDIEVAL HISTORY

In history class, we’ll create and present our own medieval town — in response to our teacher’s challenge to build a world that shows our understanding of Medieval society, The Manor System, infrastructure, religion, and more.

After school, the skill-building continues! If we’re a student athlete, we’ll practice with our team and compete against others in organized games. We can also participate in exciting clubs, like STEAM Club. STEAM Club can easily visit MIT to learn from inspiring staff and university students.

Our days are full of advanced activities, whether we’re working towards our IGCSEs or the IBDP. We study a variety of subjects in depth and connect our understanding to the world — as we get ready for an exciting future, driven by our passions and interests.

In Spanish class, we’ll practice our skills in peer-review pairs, using a script of questions and the exam expectations to get ready for our oral exams.

Returning from our recent field trip to a local factory, in Business Studies, we’ll present our analysis of the production process, marketing, and finances that led to the decision-making we observed in the factory.

PYTHAGORAS’ THEOREM

We discover how to apply Pythagoras’ theorem in our trigonometry unit in math class. We continue to apply the rule to calculating and measuring the sides of similar and congruent shapes.

CONTEXTUAL LITERARY ANALYSIS

In English Lit, we succinctly define the contextual factors around John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men using the “Pecha Kucha” technique of creating 20 slides with 20 seconds of commentary, per slide — covering The Dust Bowl to Roosevelt’s New Deal from the 1930s.

CONNECTING HISTORY AND LITERATURE

ROLE-PLAYING HISTORY

We act out history as either a German soldier or woman during a structured “speed-dating” activity, where we show the expectations of the ideal German female during the rule of the Nazi party in the early 1940s.

INTERPRETING AND RE-ENACTING

DISCOVERING PROFESSIONAL TRACKS

During our double period, we’ll participate in BISB’s annual “Careers Carousel” that includes listening to 20 different professionals speak about their work and then meeting one-on-one for 15 minutes each. Their insights help us make decisions about our IB subjects and college aspirations.

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

We enjoy participating in or leading different clubs, whether we’re planning our own Model UN Conference or preparing for the “Adventurous Journey” element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We can even lead clubs for Lower and Middle School students, like charity or dance activities.

MENTORING OTHERS

We can also peer-mentor individual or small groups of Middle School students, helping them navigate some of the exciting areas of growth that are part of adolescence. Meanwhile, we become stronger leaders, using our empathy to understand our mentees’ positions.
