Year 9 Artists started by examining the face, trying to draw the features in proportion, then studying the shape. Once we had the shape accurate, we tried to build up a full range of tone, this helps the face look more 3D.
Students practiced this with pencil first, then moved onto Charcoal which was challenging.
We aimed to show a range of tone and experiment with texture using the charcoal, students coped well with the more challenging media, highlights were added with white chalk at the end.
Year 9 students will be getting more and more abstract with their Portraits next, being inspired by African Masks, as Picasso was - in order to create a Cubist style Collograph print. I’m looking forward to seeing what the students create. After learning to create a realistic Portrait, it is fun to play around with reality and exaggerate shape, create our own patterns and change scale.
