Years 5 and 6 students at BISS participated in the online FOBISIA Maths Codebreaking Challenge. The event gave our students an exciting opportunity to put their mathematical knowledge to work in a setting that felt like a puzzle to solve.
The challenge took students through a series of codes and clues. To move forward, they had to solve mathematical problems, use their answers to uncover a password and enter it to unlock the next stage. Each new clue called for careful reading, clear thinking and a willingness to try different approaches.
Codebreaking brought together many of the skills students develop in their maths lessons. They looked for patterns, made connections, tested ideas and checked whether their answers made sense. When a solution was not immediately clear, students had to pause, reconsider their strategy and work out what the clue was asking them to do. The challenge encouraged them to apply what they know, rather than simply follow a familiar method.
It also gave students a chance to practise perseverance. A difficult code can be frustrating, but working through that uncertainty is part of becoming a confident problem solver. Students were encouraged to stay curious, learn from attempts that did not work and keep going until they found a way forward. Every password they uncovered brought the satisfaction of seeing their reasoning pay off.
Taking part as a whole Year 5 and 6 community made the day special. Every student had the opportunity to engage with the challenge and experience maths in a creative, purposeful way. The online format added an extra sense of discovery as one solved code led to the next.
Challenges like this help students see that mathematics extends well beyond a textbook page. The same habits they used to crack the codes, thinking logically, noticing details, checking evidence and persisting through setbacks, can help them tackle unfamiliar problems in school and beyond.
