Why Global Citizenship Matters for Todays Teens

At the British International School of Washington (BISW), we believe today’s teens are growing up in a world more interconnected than ever before. To thrive, they need more than academic knowledge, they need empathy, cultural awareness, adaptability, and the confidence to engage with diverse perspectives. These are the foundations of global citizenship, and they are woven into every stage of the student experience at BISW.

Global citizenship matters because it empowers young people to understand complex issues, from climate change to cultural identity, and inspires them to act with purpose. At BISW, students collaborate with peers from around the globe, gaining firsthand experience in navigating different viewpoints and appreciating the richness of diverse cultures. This daily exposure builds open‑mindedness and genuine respect which are qualities essential for leadership in today’s fast‑changing world.

Our internationally recognized curricula, enriched by our school’s British heritage and global community, encourage teens to think critically and creatively about their place in the world. Through student‑led initiatives, service learning, Model United Nations, and interdisciplinary projects, BISW learners gain the confidence to express ideas, advocate for others, and solve real‑world problems. These authentic experiences shape socially responsible young adults who see themselves not just as students but as contributors to a global community.

Global citizenship isn’t a standalone lesson at BISW it’s a way of learning and living. By nurturing ambition, cultural sensitivity, and a deep appreciation for others, we prepare our students to succeed anywhere in the world and to make meaningful, positive change along the way.

At BISW, we don’t just teach teens about the world—we help them shape it!
