Secondary Weekly Updates (17/4 - 21/4)

 Welcome to BVIS Secondary Update

Book Week

Reading aloud enables fluency to be modelled, meaning to be generated and drama to be created; it also helps students to familiarise themselves with complex vocabulary, different rhythms and patterns of syntax.  In short, reading aloud can bring a text to life.

We would like to share with you some skills that we shared with teachers and students during book week.

Know the Texts

Each of the stories are short.  Skimming them beforehand will give you an overview of unfamiliar references and words that are difficult to pronounce.

The International Duke of Edinburgh Award

After a hiatus of two years due to the Covid pandemic, it was a great pleasure to see students participating in the International Bronze Award. We had a fantastic 67 students sign up for the Award this year which shows great commitment to developing themselves outside the classroom.

Our first practice expedition took us to Pu Luong and this was a difficult challenge for many of our students. It was definitely a steep learning curve in knowing what to pack and what not to, alongside understanding their own levels of fitness. But the purpose of a practice, is exactly that, to practice. By the time our assessed expedition to Mai Chau came along, the students were so much better prepared and knowledgeable that this became almost a breeze in the park. Furthermore, their camp craft skills improved considerably as all were confident pitching their tents and using the trangia to cook nutritious meals.

Well done to all those students involved. I genuinely hope your experiences will stay with you forever and you all learnt a lot from your time on the Award.
