Term 2 Vocabulary Challenge
Term 2 Vocabulary Challenge A note from the English department.

Dear Parents,

This term, the English department are launching a 4 part vocabulary challenge to extend your child’s knowledge of ambitious words. Using complex vocabulary is essential if students want to succeed at all key stages. I am writing to inform you about this challenge, and would like to encourage you as parents, to support your children by discussing the words with them; helping them tweet responses and using the vocabulary yourself, so they experience the words first hand.  Every fortnight, the 10 words will appear in Show My Homework, so you can start using them straight away!

The challenge has 4 distinct stages:

  1. Learn it! – Students will be given 10 ambitious words every fortnight and will be tested on their spelling and meaning in class. They will be awarded 1 house point if they get all the meanings correct.
  2. Tweet It! – Students can earn up to 3 house points for tweeting a sentence, using one or more of the ambitious words. Each English teacher will have their own account as well as a physical ‘Tweet box’, where students can post their sentences, incase they cannot access Twitter.
  3. Speak It! – Students can earn up to 3 house points for using the ambitious words verbally in class.
  4. Repeat it! Students can earn up to 3 house points for writing any of the words in other subjects. One house point is awarded for each subject up to three.

This means that students can earn up to 10 house points per fortnight by attempting each stage of the challenge. It is really important that you encourage your children to participate in as many aspects of the challenge as possible to ensure they retain the vocabulary

I really hope the students rise to the challenge and have fun while learning new words.

Kind regards,

The English Department
