Dear Parents,

Last week our Head of Secondary Mr. Porter, Head of Music Mrs. Porter and teacher Ms. Hoare led our secondary roadshows at all three sister campuses. 

It was a great way to showcase Themaid campus and give our future secondary students a taste of life in Year 7 and beyond. Students were treated to an array of science investigations, singing from the choir and music from the ukulele club.

This was closely followed by a Parent Seminar to present the differences between Advanced (A) levels, Advanced Subsidiary (AS) levels and the International Baccalaureate Programme. We were delighted to welcome so many parents to the seminar and hope the information was useful. We plan to follow up with a further session to discuss university entrance and pathways to success.

Compass Themaid will be offering the AS and A level programme to students from August 2020 with the opening of Year 12 at the campus. If you would like to find out more, please contact our Admissions Officer on Olivia.villaneuva@nais.qa or the Head of Secondary on simon.porter@nais.qa.

We will be holding a Secondary Open Evening on Wednesday, 22 January from 6.00-8.00pm. We will present an overview of the curriculum, what we offer at Themaid and have staff on hand to answer any questions you have about your child’s education at Compass International School Themaid. All parents of prospective secondary students are welcome to attend.  If you cannot make it but would like further information, you are welcome to make an appointment to meet us when we can give you more detailed information in person.

Year 6 presented an assembly on Thursday morning based on the theme 'What is home?' The children worked on the IPC unit 'Extreme survivors' in December and began working on the unit 'Moving people' since returning in January. In assembly, the children acted out a classroom scene where they debated where home is and what home means. They discussed if a habitat was the same as home, if home was based on where you were born, where you lived or if home is just an idea, a feeling and where you feel safe and comfortable. The children showed iMovies, recited poems, sang national anthems and shared their experiences and spoke to the audience. They concluded that the idea of home is personal and based on experiences and individual opinion. The children finished their performance with a rap they wrote together to the tune of Fresh Prince of Belair. The rap explained how they came to live in Qatar and how excited they are for their adventures yet to come in Qatar. Well done to Year 6 on their great work.

Much of the theme of the assembly was about adaptability in both humans and animals and how we can work together towards a common goal. Students from each class were presented with a certificate for cooperation-working well together and supporting each other in class.

Talking of teamwork, Year 2 Themaid footballers went to Al Duhail on Thursday for a football festival presented by Future Football. The Year 2's had an amazing experience participating in various football activities as well as competing in matches with the other schools in Doha. The children made many new friends and can't wait for the next festival. 

The uniform pop up shop will be in school on the 21^st January from 7.00-3.00pm. Please use this opportunity to buy the correct school uniform directly from the suppliers.

Assessment is an important part of what we do in school. Teachers conduct ongoing assessments to ensure that learning is gauged at the correct level and meets the needs of all students. In the coming weeks, your child will be completing assessments in school. Please make sure they are well rested to enable them to perform well.

Many students are arriving late in the morning and missing valuable learning time. Please leave earlier if you cannot get to school before 7.15am. Thereafter secondary students are marked late.

Next week, Evolution Sports will be in school, presenting their skills and programmes and running some free football clubs for our students. This is an excellent opportunity to engage with highly qualified coaches who will develop their skills. The timings will be sent in a separate notice.
