Dear Parents,
Our International Week is a wonderful way to recognise and celebrate the 70 nationalities within our school community.
All primary students learned about the ‘home’ culture of their classmates, as well as learning about a country as a class. This week of global learning culminated in the very informative and enjoyable International Parade on Thursday morning.
Each class have shared a highlight from the week:
“3MA were focussed on Turkey and particularly enjoyed learning about Cappadocia. We learnt that because of its interesting landscape it has become the most popular place in the world to take a hot air balloon ride. The students loved making their own hot air balloons after learning about them!”
“In Year 1MB the children have enjoyed learning about China. We researched our country using the iPads and the children created a fact-file. They were particularly interested in the language that they speak in China so we learned how to write ‘Happy New Year’ in Mandarin. The children have also loved the various Chinese arts and crafts activities and are very excited about making Dragon Puppets.”
“Our highlight in 1MA was learning about our classmates home countries. Children made posters and PowerPoint presentations to share their knowledge. We loved learning more about the different cultures and countries we come from.”
“The highlight of International week for the children of 5MB was making tie-dye t-shirts. Some of the class wore their t-shirts when performing the Indonesian dance during the parade.”
“2MB had a wonderful home country shared lunch. The students also made Samoan headdress, woven placemats, learnt a dance and decorated the door but their highlight of the week has to be learning colours and numbers in Samoan.”
“To celebrate International Week, Y3MB have been learning all things Egyptian, from the ancient rituals of mummification to the extravagance of the famous pyramids. We were delighted to have our parents join our arts and crafts workshop to help us create Ancient Egyptian jewellery using a variety of materials. Our highlight of the week has to be our Ancient Egyptian dancing and we are very excited to show our new moves to the school and parents. Overall, we have had a fantastic week learning to dress, write and walk like an Egyptian!”
“5MA learned all about Nepal. This included learning about the famous Gurkha soldiers and the students participated in a series of strenuous Gurkha training tests.”
“It’s been a wonderful week in 4MA learning about Peru and today’s trip around the world was a perfect way to end the week. It was a fantastic opportunity to see all the great learning that has taken place from Year 1 to 6. One particular highlight of the week was watching the children work collaboratively to produce a model version of the Peruvian wonder of the world, Machu Picchu. The children showcased so many IPC learning goals throughout the task and were very proud of their finished models.”
“The highlight of International Week in 4MB, while learning about Kenya, was when we created tribal masks. It was great to have lots of parents join us in creating the masks out of clay, and everyone enjoyed painting them later in the week.”
“6MB have had an amazing week learning about the country of Nigeria. We’ve been treated to visits from the parents of Reagan (Year 8) and Muna (Year 6) who have showcased and modelled to the children Nigerian dances and cultures. The children have also produced some incredible presentations about their own countries which have included quizzes and delicious food samples. International Week has once again proven to be an action-packed week of activities which has really enthused the children of 6MB and given them the chance to celebrate the diversity of the class and other nations.”
“The highlight of International Week in Y5MC, who studied Belgium, was undoubtedly waffle making for which parents were welcomed in- and 10 turned up. Children made the batter at home (some made it in class) which was then used to cook the waffles at school. A wide variety of toppings were used and the children loved the waffle making as much as the waffle eating.”
“The highlight as the teacher of 6MA was the interaction between the Year 6 and the younger children as they asked them about the country that they have been studying. 6MA have created some lovely work in class, including the excellent Amazonian animals drawn in chalk.”
“Over International Week, 2MA learnt about Denmark. Marius and his mother taught us how to say thank you, hello and goodbye while passing a ball. We dressed up as Vikings and the Little Mermaid, an traditional folktale written from Danish Hans Christian Andersen. We all shared interesting facts about our home country, we ate culinary treats from each other’s homeland and we taught games.”
