International Women's Day (IWD) holds a unique place in the hearts of many around the globe. While its significance may vary from person to person, the essence of this day transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds. I realized the importance of IWD after I began working abroad. In the last two years, I have met women from every continent and listened as they shared their stories with me. I heard stories about the need for safe working conditions, the need for safe places for abuse victims, and the need for equal pay. I reflected on my own need for safety and ability for upward mobility in employment.
The privilege of working with amazing women who support and acknowledge one another is not lost on me. This is the first year I have celebrated International Women’s Day. My coworkers came up with the idea to hand out bookmarks for our female colleagues with personalized messages on each one. This is the strength of women at their best. We are inclusive, thoughtful, and pay attention to detail. We cultivate relationships. We fill each other up by saying “I see you.” This gives each one of us the strength to continue advocating for the rights and empowerment of women globally. International Women's Day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles for gender equality, reproductive rights, and the eradication of violence and abuse against women.
While this day is for women, I cannot forget the men who have been allies in the struggle for inclusion and equal rights. International Women's Day serves not merely as a celebration but as a solemn acknowledgment of the progress made and the road that lies ahead for women globally. It is a collective stance we take as mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, colleagues, friends, and neighbors—a shared commitment to fostering a world where women's rights are upheld and respected.
As we come together on International Women's Day, let us humbly learn to listen to the stories of women from all walks of life. Allow their perspectives and truths to live in the world unblemished by scrutiny and criticism. So, this International Women’s Day ask a women you know and love to tell you a story about their life.
