Between the 5th and 9th June, Dover Court International students in Year 12 visited Tioman Island in Malaysia for 5 days of learning and adventure.

Our students studying IB Biology and the Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) courses had the opportunity to study rainforest and intertidal ecosystems, whilst the remaining Year 12 students followed an engaging experiential programme.

Breathtaking views and natural beauty were enjoyed throughout the trip for our experiential group, who started their trip helping to restore coral reefs. The students hiked across the island, climbing steep hills, crossing crystal-clear streams, and even stumbling upon hidden waterfalls.

Meanwhile, our Biology and ESS learners worked incredibly hard to collect robust scientific data utilising ecological techniques. As marine organisms are only visible during low tide, students had to wake up at the crack of dawn to see them. Besides attending workshops on ecosystems, they were introduced to statistical techniques that will help them analyse and conclude their studies.

The DCIS IB teachers were highly impressed by the determination and focus of the students, even whilst on a lovely beach. Everyone ended the day snorkeling and felt like a part of the underwater world! Vibrant coral gardens were spotted, alongside colourful parrotfish, clownfish and graceful turtles. This truly allowed students had a first-hand understanding of how important it is to protect these fragile ecosystems.

This experience allowed our Year 12 students to learn beyond the classroom, make incredible memories, and develop a deep appreciation for nature! Tioman Island will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

At DCIS, school trips are a fully integrated part of our curriculum throughout the school for all to participate. Excellence in education comes not just from within the classroom, but from real-life opportunities and what can be experienced outside the classroom. Our school expeditions and trips help to achieve this. Find out more about our school expeditions and trips here.
