Learning about design, engineering and construction at the Nord Anglia Education (NAE) - Bucksmore Education summer course was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Dover Court’s Year 11 student Ayush.
The ‘Build the Future – Design, Engineer and Construct’ (DEC) course was held at the University of Cambridge, where Ayush also got a taste of university life, staying at Corpus Christi College.

This exclusive summer programme is open to all DCIS and NAE students. The course dives into the most relevant skills and techniques needed by anybody considering a professional career in architecture, engineering, and construction, including problem-solving, teamwork and critical thinking.

With access to state of-the-art computer facilities throughout the two-week experience, the students were able to develop excellent digital skills using industry-standard architectural design software.

Daniel McDonagh, who taught the DEC course shared, “Our learners explored the professional construction industry during the programme through a series of masterclasses, lessons, activities, and excursions. The programme totalled 35 hours of learning and challenged the learners to design, engineer, and digitally- construct a recording studio and music venue in Cambridge.”

“They had the opportunity to work with some incredible professionals, who provided expertise and insight into the construction and music sectors such as Cambridge Corn Exchange, Studio Hoodless and Cadventure. Our learners from around the world including Singapore, Russia, China, Brazil, and UAE received a Training Qualifications UK-endorsed DEC Award for their exceptional work at the end of the course,”said Daniel.

Ayush, who has always had an interest in art and design, and the world of architecture, found the course very insightful and inspiring. "The course has broadened my perspective on the many possible jobs and careers that I could pursue in the future such as designing, engineering and construction of buildings. It increased my knowledge in design and architecture, and I also got to meet industry experts and have first-hand experience on how they work on real life, large-scale projects such as the UK High-Speed railway project," Ayush said. “The course was very enjoyable, and I learnt a lot, and also made some amazing new friends from across the world.”
