International Award – Mala Fatra

21 October 2016

Last week two groups of excited and motivated Year 11 and 12 set off on the expedition section of their award. Day 1 saw us climb to a height of 1600 metres. We first passed through beautiful forests which opened out onto open plains, before we started the climb up onto the ridge. Here the groups were met with snow and cloud.

They navigated themselves very well through the difficult conditions, and were rewarded every so often with views of the surrounding valleys. It was beautiful to see the icicles that had formed on plants and grass due to the wind. Also we had time for a few snowballs to be thrown. The final descent to the camping area was hard going as visibility was poor and the snow made it hard to see the paths. However good team work meant we arrived after an amazing experience. On day two we were greeted with an amazing view. We had reached the camping site in cloud on the first day, so we hadn't realised that the site was overlooking the valley. We were therefore looking down at lower mountains flanked by clouds, beautiful. From camp we then climbed another 200 metres and then descended down the other side. Here we left the snow behind us and where greeted by mud and beautiful paths winding through forests and rock faces cut by rivers. The groups again outdid themselves with their navigation and improved again their group working skills. On day three we continued to walk down the valley, again through forests and fields. The navigation here was more challenging, but the students met the challenge. During the trip we got muddy and we were pushed to limits, but the groups learned a lot of good life lessons that they will be able to use and apply in the future. I am sure the groups and the school will join me in thanking Ms Romhanyi in organizing and running the trip. Also a thank you to Mr Eastwood, Mr Tibbit and Ms Statovci for being the other leaders on the trip.
