Northbridge dance teacher Mr Alan and his students embark on the 'Housebound Odyssey'

Necessity is said to be the mother of invention, and I think it safe to say the sudden shift from classroom to computer screen made inventors of us all at Northbridge International School Cambodia.

Mongkul Meas in full flight and holding a fine line.

No longer able to crush it in the studio Northbridge dancers had no choice but to hone their skills and creative talents at home and thus began our completely unexpected project: The Housebound Odyssey.

We began getting to grips with a range of ballet based exercises for control, balance and flexibility, we moved on to cardio-combinations for core-strength, and we hit some shuffling to ensure our footwork is always fancy. Then came the challenge: how do we put all of these elements together and make it look cool?

There was only one answer; student agency.

That’s right, it was now up to the students to show off the power of imagination, they had to take full agency of the project, weave together the movement and exercise combinations in any way that they pleased as long as they were operating under the mantra: be creative, clever and cool.

Did our student’s step up to the plate? Of course they did, and in fine style. Check it out.

And of course I was all about it, too.

Yes, we’ve all been isolated for the last two months, but it hasn’t stopped dance collaborations. A few intrepid students took to the digital plane, sharpened up their editing skills and got together in the virtual realm to produce some very fine work.

Don’t be shy! Mr Alan
