Climate Change Symposium

meeting

We were delighted to be invited to take part in a symposium about Climate Change hosted by the European School of Taipei and organised by TargetForGreen.org. Ten of our Year 6 students were selected to take part in online lectures, debate and policy formulation with students from some of the most prestigious schools in the East Asia Region. The other schools invited to the conference were; The British School of Guangzhou, TES French Section in Taipei, TES German Section in Taipei, The British School of Manila in the Philippines, North London Collegiate School Jeju in the Republic of Korea, Shrewsbury International School in Hong Kong, Discovery Bay International School also in Hong Kong and Dulwich College in Shanghai.

Our students were treated to a range of lectures and information sessions where they thoughtfully gave their feedback on different strategies to combat climate change and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Global Goals. Parts of the conference were in whole groups while at other times the students went into breakout rooms to discuss individual topics.  The Global Goals are already well incorporated into our school life as part of Nord Anglia’s partnership with UNICEF. One of the suggestions from our student Marco that greatly impressed the hosts was to, “Stop using complex synthetic fibres that will be inexplicably hard to decompose, and resort to more natural fibres from grains and plants”.

The students who represented our school with distinction were Mario, Ilia, Isabella, Hannah, Marco, Ruby, Kelly, Bella, Amy and Scarlet. Our principal, Mr. Ferguson, dropped in to hear and read their contributions and was hugely impressed by the level of thought and foresight shown by our Year 6’s. All the students will be presented with a certificate to mark their participation in this unique event.
