There have been some exciting things happening in STEAM design over the past few weeks. In 7th design students have been learning the importance of bridges in society and how they are built. After doing research on different types of bridges the students designed and built their own bridges with newspaper, which they will upgrade to wooden sticks next week. During this time students learn the engineering process of; identifying the problem, brainstorming, design, testing and evaluating, redesigning if needed and sharing their work. 6th grade started a new project called “the game of life” this is an interdisciplinary project that incorporates engineering, humanities, technology and maths. During this project the students participate in a “Mock” life after college. They are given a city that they will move to and they take a personality quiz to choose a job with a salary. Once the career and apartment are chosen hey must budget their bills and design their apartment floor plan. They are using tools such as, excel for budgeting and Tynkercad for apartment layouts. The purpose of this project is for them to get an understanding of wants and needs as well as what it’s like to earn and spend their own money.
Grade 6 math – Angle Relationship
Students learned about angle relationships through an engaging dance activity. The challenge was for students to step in the appropriate angles marked on the floor as indicated during a song video. Students had to learn to read and understand the angle relationship names in the song video, such as corresponding angles, vertical angles, alternate interior angles, etc. They would then identify the angle relationship on the markings on the floor and step in that spot, creating a fun dance along with the music.
Grade 7 math – Creating a Business Project
The Grade 7 maths classes have started their next exciting project! The students are working in four
groups to create their own business venture with the aim of selling handmade or homemade products to the rest of the school. They will be selling their products once per week for four weeks. Within this project the students will be expected to work together to create a business name, logo, survey, plan, keep accounts in excel, graph results, perform statistical analysis, calculate percent increase and decrease and, finally, present their work and the results of their business.
Grade 8 math – Story Problem Project
Students are working on a project in which they will create a cartoon strip, video, or a booklet of a story problem they have written. Their stories include 10 math problems using topics that we have covered in class. This is a good opportunity for students to engage in a creative, interdisciplinary approach to learning. It allows them to practice and demonstrate their mathematical skills as well as their writing and artistic abilities.
