Share Our Cultures Activity

21 April 2016

The Share Our Cultures Activity for Year 2s has brought our Primary and Secondary school students together over Term 1 and Term 2.  Each Thursday afternoon, Year 2 children have been joined by Year 10 and Year 12 students to learn traditional games, art, crafts, songs, dances, stories and greetings from cultures within our school community. Around the room, greetings have resounded to start each session: “Konnichi wa!” “Sawadee Ka!” “G’day!” “Kia Ora!” “Bonjour!” “Guten Tag!” “Annyeonghaseo!” “Maingalarpar!” “Ni hao!”

The older students have led games and activities to teach the Year 2 children, finishing each session with a story and an active song that has had everyone easily using the new language with actions and movements. As the school year has gone on, the Share Our Cultures Activity has also given the younger children the chance to take the lead to show something from their own culture. Everyone was absorbed by the teaching of how to make an origami crane by Kotone from 2T, and Fuka from 2P. In the same way, all children, big and small, were enchanted by the contributions of the Korean children, Soo Hyun, 2T, Jung Hyun, 2T, Dain, 2S, Lucy, 2P, and Su Jeong, 2P, to retell a Korean folk tale in which a baby rabbit outwits a tiger – a tale, the girls told us all proudly, that had been handed down by word of mouth from their grandparents to their parents to these girls.

On International Day, the Scottish dance performance by all these students was a lovely indication of how this learning and sharing together has been tremendous fun.
