Materials needed to carry out the restoration, provide for bookshelves and books are budgeted at 12,000RMB. This resulted in a fundraising target for each class of 4,000RMB.
Year 12C convinced Head of School Mr Parrish to allow himself being taped to the wall, with Duct tape, and set out to sell tokens for students to obtain strips of tape. Our class set itself a target to sell a minimum of 6 rolls of tape, or 300 m.
Research suggested that to carry the weight of an average person about 2.5 rolls, or 125m would be needed. However we were not sure of the quality of the tape available and Mr Parrish is not an average person. A trial run where we attempted to tape a light member of class to the wall failed miserably, but provided some insight in how the surface impacted on the ‘tack’ as well as in the technique required to provide maximum support.
Bets were taken and there was no member of staff or student actually believing we would be able to do it. To be honest we were not entirely convinced ourselves…
Our sales teams managed to sell 150 m of Duct tape, generating a total of RMB1500, missing our target by half. To ensure we would stand a chance to actually stick Mr Parrish, double amounts of tape were given out by the our operations team.
Did we meet our second challenge, and did the tape hold up?
