Mr Travis Andersen explains, “We’re looking at the concept of magnetism, starting first with showing the students how magnets work and how powerful they can be, then gradually broadening the concept by creating our own play scenes where the characters “magically” move around using magnets.”
Mr Andersen says his class expanded on the subject gradually; firstly as a class creating a lake scene on a small whiteboard sheet onto which was placed a homemade boat with a paperclip attached to its base. Using a magnet below the sheet, students were able to see how the magnet could be used to move the boat around – as if by magic!
As the whole of Summer School is working towards Friday’s Summer School production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the class decided to try making their own magnetic stage sets and use the same principles to move the characters around. The pleasure and pride students have taken in this project was obvious today with each student enthusiastically displaying their stage sets and showing how they are able to combine drama and science in a super fun way.
