NAIS Pudong Donation for Elsa

22 October 2015

Last week, a little girl arrived in Shanghai by train from Western China. An orphan, accompanied on the trip only by the medical director of the orphanage, she will be cared for in Shanghai by the Baobei Foundation through donations, including 23,000RMB donated by our NAIS Pudong Community Group.

  • Elsa

Students in Year 7 were charged with coming up with some suggested English names for the little girl, to be used while she is in Baobei’s care. Their list was sent to Baobei and their favourite, Elsa, was selected.

The timing of the Community Group donation was very fortuitous as Elsa’s health was very poor when she arrived in Shanghai and she required emergency neurosurgery. Evelin Tai from Baobei Foundation declared, “Your timing is impeccable!”

Fortunately, Baobei was able to organise the emergency surgery with one of the best neurosurgeons in Shanghai, and Elsa is now in a stable condition in hospital. However, that surgery isn’t the end of her treatment as she will need follow-up surgery over the next couple of months. According to Baobei, the total cost of Elsa’s treatment may be as much as 100,000RMB.

During Elsa’s stay in hospital, students and volunteers will be able to visit her and assist in a variety of ways, including with transport around Shanghai. Community Group Committee member Selena Bertolotti visited Elsa earlier this week and reported she is doing well, eating and was even able to say “bye bye” in English. The hospital visits also allow the Baobei ayi, who lives in the hospital with Elsa during her stay, a small and much needed break.

The Baobei Foundation provides lifesaving medical care for orphans from around China, as well as the follow-up care so necessary for their recovery. You can find out more about the charity and how you can help here. If you would like to know more about hospital visits, please contact the Community Group at
