It’s an important obligation that all of our students take seriously, and this year one of our Year 6 students, eager to embark on his first Project Week, really stepped up to challenge, personally raising 7,300RMB for the Year 6 effort.
Max decided to do a personal swim-a-thon, with sponsors paying per lap for his swim. His teacher, Mrs Robyn Batchu explains how he ended up raising such a huge sum: “His initial target was 25 laps, but once he started swimming, he couldn’t stop! Max finally ended the swim at an almighty 100th lap; a fantastic effort!”
The six weeks of fundraising prior to Project Week saw students set up stalls at our Family Picnic and Dads & Kids Campout, selling everything from glow sticks to homemade healthy treats, as well as the very popular bake sales. Project Week coordinator Ms Jane Kilpatrick said the total raised across all seven classes was more than 77000RMB, explaining, “These funds will be used to support orphanages and primary schools, to provide water for remote villages and protect fragile environments at our project sites around China. I have been enormously impressed by the energy, creativity and commitment shown by all students.”
When asked how he managed to swim so many laps Max said with a huge smile, “After 40 laps I stopped counting and just swam as many as possible.”
Of Max's personal fundraising effort, Ms Kilpatrick continues, “Max’ fundraising stands out because of his independent initiative. He took on a personal challenge, set and surpassed his own goals and the results are fantastic."
