You couldn’t miss the Latin Mamas at the festival. With their colourful logo proudly displayed, the fragrance of delicious home-cooked paella and quesadillas, and the festive beat of Latin music. The combination obviously attracted lots of people to sample their wares and help this energetic group of Spanish-speaking parents to raise such an impressive amount to support the Community Group and our school charities.
Latin Mamas organiser Marcia Calvi says, “We are happy, proud and scared ... thinking that we need to be better next year!”
The Latin Mamas hosted their first Summer Fair stall nine years ago, and year on year have increased the amount they have been able to raise, with the assistance of their own generous sponsors who donated the drinks, ice creams and tortillas to sell.
Two days before Summer Festival, they all gathered to prepare the food and make final plans for the day. But this year, as a number of the members are moving on, it was a special surprise party as well, with all the Latin Mamas dressed in qipaos and with paper umbrellas and fans. The ladies who will leave this year - Blanca, Anita, Valeria, Fernanda, Pat, Pauli and Sonia – each received a Latin Mamas mug as a memento of their time with the group in Shanghai.
One of the leavers, Sonia Castro, described her surprise, “This time was my turn… after seven wonderful years in the school. I feel very proud to be part of this marvelous bunch of ladies. It has been a big part of our lives. I will miss them a lot!”
