Year 11 News

15 January 2016

Firstly, I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to all our Year 11 students and parents. I hope you all had a relaxing break with your families and that, if you went away, that the jet lag was not too horrific on your return!

  • Year 11

As ever, I have been very impressed with the mature and conscientious way in which year 11 have approached the return to their studies in the last two weeks. It has been a great pleasure having them back in the classroom after ‘losing’ them for two weeks at the end of last term to the mocks, and they have been working very hard already.

With reference to the mocks, I am unable to congratulate individual students on their results, as at the time of going to press, the mock results have not yet been officially released- indeed, Art and Drama students were still completing their mock exams last week. Suffice it to say that analysis of the results so far presents a very promising picture, and that with hard work, year 11 will undoubtedly be able to build on their mock results to achieve excellent IGCSE grades.

Outside the classroom, on Tuesday 12th January five of our students were invited by Mr Bailey to attend a special performance by three Juilliard alumni: Benjamin Moermond on Bassoon, Xiangyu Zhou on clarinet and Peng-Peng Gong on piano. This was an exciting and eclectic performance incorporating both traditional classical music and some more modern works, which was enjoyed by all our students. The year 11 students selected to attend were Chloe Ng, Charlie Macdonald - Butler , Lara Ferreira, Matej Kalina and Michelle Yang.

I would also like to give a brief message about attendance. As the exams approach, it is more and more important that year 11 students do not miss lessons if at all possible. Of course, serious illness cannot be avoided, but please do encourage your children to attend school even if they have a slight cold or similar. Missing lessons unnecessarily can only lead to further stress for the students as they need to catch up on missed work, and good attendance is one of the strongest factors influencing good performance at IGCSE.

View from the classroom

The Y11 Economics class has had fun with numbers and graphs in the "Economic Indicators" topic. Each student was chose a country to investigate, researching on various macroeconomic variables such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth and inequality in the distribution of income. The class was amazed with their discoveries, especially because most elected to research on their home countries. They were also proud to showcase and compare their countries' economic performance with those of their "rivals". It was clear that their graph interpretation skills were top-notch as most were able to make sense of complex statistics. For the rest of the term, the focus is on development and international economics in which more statistical research and analysis will be conducted.

Students have been creating cash flow forecasts on excel, based on a stream of 'live' problems that constantly hit their business.

Choosing from random chance cards they might receive "this month your business wins an award, gain 1000 pounds" or "you decide to install Internet in your office, pay 40 extra each month until the end of the year"

Since every student draws a different set of cards every cash flow is different and they can compare problems!

Year 11 set 1 have started to use their new iPads in lessons whilst studying the topic of sequences and series. Pupils have access to a series of videos online so that everyone can work at their own pace through the topic, rewinding and replaying the videos as they need to. The previous topic of vectors was a very visual learning experience and the students are now enjoying the challenge of a more algebraic topic. Both these topics display what mathematics is all about – patterns! If we can spot them then we have discovered something!

Year 11 German embark on their final new topic of IGCSE - die Umwelt, or 'the environment' - before undertaking an intensive revision programme of all topics and grammar studied previously during the course.

Year 11 Biology have been learning about Ecology and successfully sampled a lawn to estimate the population of different plants.
