With its roots in Buddhist and Taoist religious tradition, the Temple Fair is one of the highlights of the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year as families and communities gather together to celebrate the new lunar year with performances and cultural activities, plus wonderful seasonal foods.
The NAIS Pudong Temple Fair will showcase Chinese culture within our school, drawing as well on our broader Shanghai community. Running from 11am until 3pm, there will be a wide range of activities for children of all ages, as well as family and friends. With over 15 craft and cultural activities on offer, including Kite Making, Porcelain Painting, Rabbit Lantern Making and Learning Taiji, there really will be something for everyone.
The NAIS Pudong IB and Community Choirs have been rehearsing traditional and not-so-traditional Spring Festival pieces for the fair, and they will be joined by a visiting local school orchestra as well as a professional Chinese group performing on Chinese instruments. Our school Chinese dancers, Kung Fu students and student musicians will also showcase their talents completing a full programme of musical and cultural performances.
Not to be missed will be the traditional Lion Dance, to ward off evil spirits and welcome the New Year. There will be two lion dance performances – at 12 noon and 2pm. You will also be able to marvel at the skill and speed of an authentic Lanzhou Lamian (pulled noodle) chef as he transforms a tiny ball of dough into metres of delicious noodles. Demonstrations will be held throughout the day.
Once your appetite is whet, enjoy foods from around the Middle Kingdom in our Chinese Food Court set up in the Hub. From dim sum to hot pot, egg tarts to bing tang hulu, chefs from the Shangri-La Pudong, Kerry Hotel Pudong and Sodexo have put together all your favourite Chinese foods for the season. Same Same But More Culture cooking school will be teaching the fine art of dumpling making, as well as helping the children decorate special monkey cookies as a very special CNY treat.
Come dressed in your favourite (usually red) Spring Festival outfit and bring your friends along to join the fun of Temple Fair as we welcome the Year of the Monkey.
