It's always difficult when selecting teams as, ultimately, some students will be disappointed if they are not chosen. However, the PE department would like to say a massive well done to all those who took part in the trials and it was a fantastic effort by all. The squads will be made up of Year 7 and 8 students, who will travel together over four days to Hong Kong to compete against six other schools from around Asia. Congratulations to those Year 8s that have made it into the squads. They are:
Girls
Alessandra Perone
Tinah Otula
Chiara Taylor
Yukiko Jauffret
Elodie Jacqmin
Bianca Verni
Sofie Vesterbaek
Boys
Matthew Ward
Jake Lonsdale
Mayuel Perret
Jason Drewes
Mikkel Raan
Luke Khalife
Alexandros Pardali
Training will take place from now until March and all schedules and training fixtures/meets will be sent to students and parents. Students are already aware of the Swimming, Basketball and Football training schedule. Good luck to all in advance. The picture above shows the whole squad together.
Ambition gets results!
Our students were among some 500 entrants to the competition which asked students to create an artwork around the theme “My City”. Our students’ contributions ranged from a water colour painting of the Pudong skyline to an abstract impression of the city lights, and were commended for their creativity and accuracy. The 50 finalists in the competition will have their work exhibited at the Hub shopping mall in Minhang and on Saturday, entrants were recognised in a special awards ceremony. Sisi was exceptionally successful in achieving a 1st runner up place with her abstract piece. Well done Sisi! This is a fantastic achievement and just goes to show, once more, the talent that lays amongst our students here at NAIS, and especially within Year 8!
Lesson Updates & General
German
Year 8 German classes have been learning to use the conjunction ‘weil’ which requires quick thinking and movement of the verb. I am very pleased with their work so far and both classes are showing a strong understanding of sentence structures.
Spanish
Year 8 Spanish students are learning to invite people to go out in Spanish. They have had a lot of fun making up excuses to reject their friends' invitations! Also, Yukiko Jauffret and Ceon Park scored 98% in a recent impromptus reading comprehension exercise, showing that they have been putting a lot of effort in learning the vocabulary and structure. Well done.
Geography
In Geography Y8 students are finishing off their unit on coasts ready for the assessments. 8B have been experimenting with using their ipads for a piece of work on the Holderness coasts with some students creating educational videos and others using book creator in order to make books which can be read on ibooks. They have had great results.
Mandarin
In Mandarin Year 8 beginner level students are starting to learn countries and Continents. They will be able to talk about the places they have been to and the places they are still yet to visit.
English
This half-term Year 8 will be focusing on film studies and how they might turn a critical eye to notions of genre, character and theme in that most popular of mediums. Check out the picture of 8C designing their film plots and trailers.
Science
Year 8 have been looking at the ways we classify different organisms and have observed pond water to identify different microscopic plants and animals.
PE
Miss Sparkes PE group have been focusing on Fitness in this block. As you can see from the photos, the girls were really getting into the session and were working hard throughout!
