Student's Voice - International Week Review

14 October 2016

Written by Jenny Pang, 11A

It’s been a week since International week but it was an important week for our school as we are an international school and having this allows students from different countries to celebrate their own cultures. I believe that for many students and teachers, it’s definitely one of the most memorable weeks of the school year.

For me, International Week this year was very special, as I was part of the Internationalism team, where I had the opportunity to work with my committee to help and support a range of activities, as well as taking part in some annual events held at our school. Below are some examples:

International Quiz

One of our goals for Internationalism this year is to celebrate the diversity in our student body, and what better way than to host a quiz, based on the different cultures and backgrounds found within our school! This quiz was not only a great opportunity to test our general knowledge; it was also a good chance to get more points for our houses! This competition was for students in Years 7 to 13, some of the questions were quite challenging but working with their house teammates they all did very well. Qi and Dao houses drew for third place, Li was second and De won the event. Everyone was rewarded with house points, which will be counted towards their house totals.

International Day

On Thursday, our annual International Day, we had the pleasure of witnessing the diverse range of cultures that our school possesses, as students and teachers from around the world dressed up in traditional clothing or outfits that represented their home country / nationality. Some of our talented peers and their families also performed musical and artistic pieces throughout the day, treating us to a day of top quality performances, with a cultural twist. This also allowed us to be open to learning about traditions from various cultures – something that makes our school special.

The major highlight, also a tradition at our school, was the International Day Parade. We saw many delicate pieces of clothing like Hanbok from Korea, Kimono from Japan, Jallabia from Saudi Arabia, Qi Pao from China – the list goes on. We were able to participate in the parade with our respective countries, with pride, of course!

International Food Fair

This is without doubt one of the best events in the school and one of the most anticipated events of the year! The Food Fair provides us with an opportunity to sample international dishes. Every year parents organise an amazing Food Fair and this year definitely did not disappoint.  Some of us head into the fair with a certain stall in mind, but end up leaving having falling in love with treats from countries that we had never tasted food from. We are very thankful to have so many dedicated parents who have put in so much effort the past few weeks, in order to make this Food Fair possible.

Overall, I think it can easily be agreed that International Week fell nothing short of incredible, and we are already looking forward the next one!
