English
In English we will be starting a text which is in line with our new IPC Topic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. In addition to this we will be looking at how to describe ibn detail, writing from the first person perspective, understanding how the structure of a story affects meaning and using more adventurous vocabulary in our writing. Tying in to our text, we will also be focusing on how Roald Dahl uses this type of vocabulary to describe characters in his novel.
Maths
In Maths we will be beginning a unit of work on Symmetry. We will first refresh our understanding of 2D shape, recalling their names and properties. After this we will be looking at identifying lines of Symmetry in 2D shapes presented in different orientations. We will then be looking at completing a simple symmetric shape and pattern with respect to a specific line of symmetry.
Topic
The introduction to our topic of Chocolate last week with a tour to ‘Zotter Chocolate Factory’ was amazing and we have had a great time tasting different types and learning the process of how it is made. This week we will be expanding on our understanding of chocolate by learning as Geographers. We will be looking at the conditions experienced whilst working on cocoa farms, what cash crops are and comparing cocoa to other crops like coffee.
We will then be changing our focus to that of Historians and focusing on the History of Chocolate. We will be investigating where it came from, how it is different to what we love today and some of the key people who were involved with the spread of this wonderful treat around the world. Through this we will be investigating Spanish explorers as well as Aztec Emperors.
Next week we will be informing the children that they will be taking part in workshops on Friday run by the UK Space Academy in school and there will be a lecture on Thursday (6-7pm) on Travelling to Space, this is a great opportunity and very exciting!
