A word from the Year Leader
It was full steam ahead this week when the students took part in our first STEAM day. The time table was collapsed for the day while students took part in a variety of activities. There was a great buzz around school on Thursday as students engaged in active, collaborative learning that was cross-curricular. The students participated in the Big Draw where they were illustrating a large dragon that will hang in C block, and also worked through the design process to develop hoop gliders and mini pylons. Some students have summed up the events of the day.
We had to make glider prototypes using the material provided. The challenge was to get the glider to travel as far as possible without hitting the floor, ceiling or the wall. We had time to design and test our glider before the challenge.
We were given a short talk on structural engineering and its relevance in life. Then the challenge was set. We were given a set of equipment which included paper, tape, string, a scissors and some modelling clay and we had to create a set of symmetrical pylon that had to withstand a weight and wind test. We had to try to include height in the plan. Dao house were the winners.

We have been practising different patterns before we draw it on the big dragon later. There are different art project happening but we are focusing on patterns. We are drawing different squares, circles, triangles and combining them into one shape.

We are using the styles and techniques of the visiting artist Mr Procter to make our own monster design like his collection. We have looked at what his style is like and how we can recreate something similar. We were using materials such as brushes and black paint and paper.
And it’s here! Finally the packing has commenced and we are ready to go. Everything is in place for an excellent week in Sanya. I hope everyone has checked of their packing list and is fully prepared for a fun filled week. Just a couple of reminders:
Meeting place and times –
Don’t forget we are meeting bright an early on Monday morning. 5.35am in C block foyer. Students should find their group leader and hand in their passport straight away. For those students planning to go straight to Hongqiao, the meeting point is by Starbucks in terminal 2 departures. Please can you be there no later than 7am. The rest of the group should arrive by 6.45am. Also it is crucial that you let me know beforehand if you intend to go to the airport to avoid delays to the bus departure from school.
You will be able to follow all the excitement going on in Sanya using our tumblr blog. We will upload pictures as often as the internet permits. And have a daily round up of activities. The link for Year 9 tumblr is http://y9sanya16.tumblr.com
