Star of the Week in 5A is Bruno Smolcic, for excellent topic work.
Star of the Week in 5B is Chakkarin Steven Manning, for his enthusiasm and resilience in learning tricky new words, suffixes and word meanings during spelling lessons.
English
Next week in English, we will continue to read ‘Tiger, Tiger’. Focusing on story structure and conflict resolution, we will be continuing to summarise and retell the story. We will also look at picking apart the metaphors and figurative language of the text. In Guided Reading, we will be focusing on retrieving information from non-fiction texts linked to our topic work on Ancient Greece. In spelling, we will be focusing on the ‘fer’ suffix, deciding when the ‘r’ needs to be doubled. If you want to work with your child on this at home, you could use the words and activities found on the following website: https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/list.cfm?wordlist=4660. Spellzone is a great starting place for online games and activities linked to spelling.
Maths
Next week in Mathematics, we will be learning about 3D shape. Focusing primarily on visualizing and constructing shape, we will be identifying shapes, describing shapes using appropriate mathematical terminology and identifying or describing nets of shapes. In Ms. Preston’s group, we will explore patterns in how shapes are names, and explain the difference between prisms and pyramids. Using isometric paper, we will identify pictures of 3D shapes within 2D drawings, and will begin to construct diagrams using isometric paper ourselves. We will even complete some tricky problem solving linked to cubes, cuboids and puzzling faces!
Topic
This week, we found out a lot about life in Ancient Greece. We explored the difference between Ancient and Modern Greece, identified geographical features of the landscape, and made suggestions about how this might have affected early civilisations choosing to live there. We have explored primary and secondary sources, and retold the story of The Trojan War. Next week, we will continue to explore the culture and lifestyle of the citizens of Ancient Greece, before finding out about their neighbours, the Persians, and retelling the epic battle legends of the Persian Wars.
