Year 6 Week Ahead Information

02 December 2016

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 as Bakers

Information and Reminders

Four students presented a brief version of our Project Week trip on Monday; well done to Jamie Howell, Andrew Tsui, Bethany Poisson and Kokil Sehgal. They were praised by the Secondary Year Leaders for their confidence to speak without notes in front of a large audience of peers.

The U11 football teams completed their season at an extremely cold and wet morning at Dulwich Suzhou on Saturday 26th November. All the teams showed great effort, teamwork and perseverance, and came away with high praise but no trophies on this occasion. A massive ‘thank you’ to all parents who turned out to support the players – it is highly appreciated by staff and students.

In English, we will continue our current unit called ‘Let’s Celebrate’, which looks at different cultural celebrations from around the world. We will consider how authors manipulate the reaction of a reader, and how character and setting are presented. We will look at Standard English in writing, and compare the style and presentation of non-fiction texts. In SPAG, we will be looking at finite verbs and how to spot them.

We will work on algebraic proficiency. Students will learn to use and create simple formulae in words, and work with formulae to solve problems. Students will need to remember the order of operations, and facts about the area and perimeter of rectangles. Common errors in this section can arise when incorrectly applying the above mathematical facts. Students should be aware of the difference between metric and imperial measurements, so should revise this if they are uncertain.

We will continue to explore our Topic of ‘Making New Materials’. The cooking of muffins was highly successful last week and we are considering doing some more cooking in the future. Parents are invited to get in touch if you would like to help facilitate such a lesson! We will finish the science tasks by turning our attention to magnetism, and separating materials, before we tackle some artwork using new materials, and research famous objects of the past made from bronze, stone, iron and ceramic.
