Year 5 Week Ahead Information

19 February 2016

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5.

Information and Reminders

During this week and next week’s PE lessons, children will have the opportunity to take part in FOBISIA trials.

Tuesday 8th March - Friday 11th March - Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast tickets are on sale – make sure you get your tickets as they are quickly selling out!

Next week in English, we will be beginning work on our IPC topic-related novel, Pig-Heart Boy (Malorie Blackman). Having begun to look at issues relating to transplants and surgery in our Guidance work over this week and next, we will be looking at how to formulate arguments and opinions over ethical dilemmas. This will involve a return to looking at cohesive devices, with a particular focus on creating flow between the end of one paragraph and the start of the next. We will also return to internal cohesion through use of pronouns, repetition, and referring back to the previous sentence.

As part of our reading coverage, we will make character inferences and predictions about the story, using hot-seating, role-play and asking leading questions. Furthermore, we will annotate and analyse  extracts of text and identify what makes it effective in terms of language and structure. Finally, we will imitate an author’s style through work completed in collaborative groups.

This week in Maths, the children have been learning about factors and multiples. They have become familiar with the terms Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) and Highest Common Factor (HCF). In addition, the children also learnt about Prime, Square and Cube numbers. These will be reinforced next week during our mental oral starter activities.

Next week in Maths, we will be teaching the children a new concept, 'ratio'. The children will be learning to use a ratio table to solve problems. We will also recap on formal written methods for division. At the end of the week we will be focusing on problem solving. The children will be working collaboratively to solve measure problems focusing on length and money.

As internationally minded citizens, the children will be continuing their work on worldwide health issues and creating videos to show their knowledge on the Ebola virus. As Scientist, the children will continue their learning on the lungs by carrying out an investigation on the capacity of our lungs and also watching a teacher demonstration about the impact of smoking. Nearer the end of the week, as technologists, the children will be planning and making a healthy snack which they will evaluate and write instructions for.
