Year 8 Composing with Sibelius

15 March 2016

Following on from the work we have been doing with the ABRSM Music Theory, students in Year 8 Music have now started to put this knowledge into a more practical approach by composing using Sibelius. Sibelius is an industry-standard piece of software that publishers and composers would use regularly. It can also have video imbedded so composers of film, television or music advertisements can line up their music perfectly; it is a very versatile programme.

Our students in Year 8 are just starting to work out how they input the notation and add the correct Time Signatures, Key Signatures and Tempo markings. Then they are able to add in an 8-bar chord sequence and compose three different melodies over the top of these chords. Once they have managed to do this, they can start to embellish the melodies by adding in more notes to make the rhythms more interesting. Finally, the pupils will explore dynamic details in order to shape their own music. Once their piece is complete, they will able to save the music as an MP3 and place it in their ITunes account or email it home to be able to play to their parents.

All of this composing is really challenging our students as we continue to work on setting ambitious targets for them to reach, not to mention moving each student forward when looking at our collaboration with Juilliard.
