Next week our English will be based around our theme continent for International Week which is Africa. Children will focus on a number of different countries and use images and ideas of travelling as a stimulus for writing in a number of different genres.

We will cover the objectives of writing instructions, writing short stories, editing and evaluating work, writing descriptively and writing a narrative story. Within these genres we will revisit and reinforce the children’s understanding of modal verbs and their use of adverbials of time, place and number (frequency). We will also reinforce and correct the use of hyphens to avoid ambiguity.

Next week in Maths children will focus on developing their skills to resolve multi step problems within context. Children will revisit and reinforce their ability to decide which operation and method they use to resolve real life problems. Having made decisions and explained calculations, children will check their answers and practice estimation and approximation.

Children will focus on these two main objectives:

Solve multi-step addition and subtraction problems in less familiar contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.

Check answers to calculations with mixed operations and large numbers, choosing the most appropriate method, including estimation, and determining, in the context of a problem, an appropriate degree of accuracy.

Next week children will complete their AD900 Topic. We will be closing this topic by reviewing what the children have learnt and responding to the knowledge harvest they generated at the beginning of the unit. We will also complete both Islamic and Mayan art pieces. As part of International Week children will learn about Africa; in particular Morocco, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana. Children will have the opportunity to take part in various lessons focusing on each of these countries and explore their cultures and traditions through Art, Geography, Language and History.
