This week marked the start of the Space and Science Fiction Book Week. Students in both Secondary and Primary dressed up in their costumes to match the theme of the week. As always, Book Week was a  very successful week, with many activities going on throughout; Monday was dress-up day, yesterday and today saw a visit from the UK National Space Academy, tonight there is a movie night for Years 7-9, as well as many book readings and events happening each day. Check out the school website to find out more. Will anyone be able to guess what my outfit was?

FOBISIA – Ready to go!
So, the time has finally come. Students in Year 7 and 8 have been preparing for the U13 FOBISIA Games in Hong Kong, to be held this week. The girls and boys travelled to Kellett School HK to take part in the biggest and longest-running international school sport tournament; FOBISIA. Teams from Shanghai, Beijing, Taiwan, Vietnam and Hong Kong compete in Swimming, Athletics, Football and Basketball. The students for NAIS Pudong are:
Boys: Jake, Matthew, Luke, Mayeul, Jason, Alesandros
Girls: Alessandra, Sophie, Chiara, Elodie, Tina, Yukiko and Bianca

The team has had an impressive first two days of competition, with a bag of medals to bring home. Congratulations to all our NAIS Pudong Tigers!

Beauty and the Beast
WOW! Simply, WOW! Last week held the school production of Beauty and the Beast. I can say without hesitation that it was the best performance I have seen to date here at NAIS Pudong. With a cross-school cast of various students from various year groups, it was fantastic to see and highlight the talented young actors within the school. A massive well done to our Year 8 students; Tinah, Isabella, Colin, Emma, Eli, Michaela, Ida, Zuzana and Mia for their performances over the four nights. Superb.

The Global Challenge –  William Shakespeare
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare in 2016, Nord Anglia is challenging its students from around the world to read, memorise, practice and recite a famous speech from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Students will then create a short single-take video of their performance, which will be uploaded to the Global Campus to be shared with other students around the world and entered into a competition across the family of schools, which will be judged by Shakespearean experts. There are two different categories for the competition, and we cannot wait to see the performances! Good luck everyone!

Upcoming Events & Dates
17/18 March – UK National Space Academy visit
21 – 25 March – International Week
24 March – International Music Evening
25 March – Term 2 reports distributed
25 March – end of Term 2 (re-opens Tuesday 5 April)

View from the classroom

In DT, Year 8 have been busy making their moulds and casting their pewter pendants. However, the project does not stop there! In the weeks that follow they will be learning how to finish their product using various filing methods.

Year 8 are currently learning how to compose a Ground Bass using the music software Sibelius. They are creating chord sequences and melodies for five different instruments.

Year 8 Boys have been ‘SWORKING-IT’ in PE this week. All students in Year7-9 have downloaded the SWORKIT app onto their iPad and have been using it in lessons for warm-ups and for fitness sessions. The app allows you to design exercise routines that looks at CV fitness, strength, core, upper and lower body as well as yoga conditioning. Students have designed their own 25-minute workout and have been working hard to complete them!

Student Reporters
Andrea Fabbricatore - 8B for Geography
In Geography we are currently studying microclimates; they are climates in a small area. We have learned about the different types of objects to measure the climate and their uses, for example the Anemometer is used to measure the wind speed, the Barometer measures air pressure, the Compass finds North, South, West and East.

We then studied what could affect microclimates, for example buildings, wind direction, wind speed. We finally went in different areas of the school to record their different microclimates. We recorded our results in a table, writing all the information we had gained and what could have affected these microclimates the most.

Jake Lonsdale - 8B for Maths
In Maths we did a variety of different and educational revision. We were given papers that not only challenged us but also gave us time to revise and go over Chapters 1-5 for the upcoming test. In my opinion, I really benefited from the papers because it let me have a guideline in what to revise at home when I got stuck. Just before the test, we went over as much as we could to make sure that everyone was prepared when doing the test.

When going into the test everybody sat down and got their equipment ready. When the 45min started, no sound was heard and everybody in their own time started the test. After the 45 minutes, the test papers were handed in and everybody left the class.

The next day we started a new chapter (Chapter 6) trying to find x when 2 sides out of 3 are given. You do this by using ratios to work out the side.

Mia Jensen - 8B for Music
These past few weeks in music we have been working on the computers. We have been using a program called Sibelius 7. With it we can compose songs with the instruments of our choice. We have been using it to write our own pieces, but to do it correctly we must include all of the right notes in all of the right places, and we must focus on the chords, because if we are in different keys we must start with a different note - Eg. D Major must start with D. We have only been using 3 chords: D Major is the chord that I am using. I find what we are doing very interesting because it is a different way of using music that we do not use often.

Ida Jezioro 8B for German
For the past few weeks in German we have been learning to speak and write about housework in German and most of us learned how to speak in the past, present and future. This year, the class has more students as more decided to join German as their foreign language class. After we learned the vocabulary, to make sure we remember them we have activities in which we stand up having fun and learning at the same time. I really enjoy German this year and I hope all the other students do too.
