English
When we return from the holidays, we will revisit ‘Moonshot – The Journey of Apollo 11’. The children will write diary entries as one of the astronauts, focusing on using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to add detail and cohesion to their writing. They will then plan and write a narrative story about an adventure into space. The children will be asked to think carefully about the setting and the character and how they can develop these as the story progresses. At the end of the week, they will develop their editing skills by checking and re-drafting their work.
In guided reading, the focus will be on finding and retrieving information from non-fiction texts. The children will need to use the contents, glossary and index of a non-fiction book to find specific information about a topic.
Maths
In Maths, the learning will focus on time. The children will revise and develop their ability to tell the time to half past, quarter past and quarter to times, and those children who are already confident in this will move on to telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. They will also apply their understanding of time to solving word problems. We will use both analogue and digital clocks to do this.
Topic
As technologists, after the holidays the children will explore concepts of time in terms of days, months and years. They will then design and make their own calendar. We will also begin to explore how time influences festivals and celebrations in different cultures by learning about some different festivals of light from around the world.
