English
The week after the holidays will bring the opportunity for children to reflect upon some targets from the last term. We will revisit some objectives and use them within different contexts. In writing, children will focus on understanding and relationship between subject and verbs within a sentence and using the correct agreement. We will also practice using contractions, both for omission and possession. Where possible, we will practise these skills within the theme of Fairgrounds. We have a number of Fairground-themed books and as a class will focus particularly on a beautiful book called ‘ Leon and The Place Between’ by Grahame Baker Smith. We will use this book in a number of lessons along with some others in Reading where we will focus on the objective of discussing and evaluating language and the impact it has on the reader.
Maths
In Maths we will continue to concentrate on number work. Children will be focusing on the objectives of multiplying and dividing in different contexts and using efficient written methods to do so. Children will work with whole number and decimals and learn to solve problems within real-life settings. We will relate our Maths work to our Fairgrounds topic where possible.
Topic
After the holiday, Year 6 will begin a new unit of learning in Topic. You will shortly receive the new unit letter about ‘Fairgrounds’, this will outline for you much of what the children will be learning throughout this unit. This is very much a science and investigative unit of work. At the start of our return to school, children will work in groups to design and build a new kind of fairground ride. As part of this process, children will be begin to understand the mechanics and science behind what creates a ride and we will focus on forces and velocity. It would be great if your child could bring some junk modelling equipment into school next term in order to help them with this exercise. Thank you in advance.
