Letter from the Director of Music and The Arts - 3rd March 2016

03 March 2016

My focus this week is with our Art Department.

It has been another busy month in the Art Department and we are now full swing into the final leg of the IB and IGCSE courses. A sense of urgency is high in these classes but the creativity is flowing. This creativity has been inspired with our first annual IGCSE and IB Art Gallery trip which took place a couple of weeks ago. This was a fun-filled day of critiquing and art appreciation which has fueled the students’ ideas and imagination and has led to a very positive and creative start to the final exam period. As can be seen from the pictures, this turned out to be a wonderful day full of creativity and observational drawings.

The Year 11s have been tackling the abstract exam theme of past, present and/or future with vigor and enthusiasm with some interesting experiments into movement and decay being explored. With six weeks to go, it promises to be a creative and eventful term for the Year 11s.

It has also been a fruitful and dynamic three weeks for our younger Secondary students. Assessments are now in full swing and it is astonishing how much progress each child has made with their current skills-based units. The portrait unit being undertaken by the Year 9s has gone better than Mr Thomas could have imagined, with some beautifully accurate drawing full of tonal shading. The Year 8s have embraced their current unit with the same enthusiasm and vigor, with their current tonal work promising to materialise in some outstanding work. Their hard work and determination will result in another fantastic end-of-term exhibition.

There are a few tickets left for Beauty and the Beast for the Red Carpet event on Tuesday 8th March, the opening night of our show. There will be no tickets available to purchase on the door so please buy them now from Main Reception!
