Tuesday should have been another opportunity for parents to come into school for our primary Sports Day but, unfortunately, the weather got the better of us and we were rained off until today. The wait was definitely worth it and the sun came out for us the entire day.
Years 1 and 2 began the morning with a wide range of activities which each child participated in. Activities included Bench Balance, Mini Hurdles, Standing Long Jump and Agility Run as well as many other different tasks. The carousel of activities enabled the students to all have a go and shine in areas that they were particularly good at, and more importantly earn lots of well-deserved house points. It was a very close competition with parents, students and teachers cheering our teams on but eventually De house (green) triumphed as the Infant champions. To round off the morning, the Infant students were then treated to some delicious snacks that their parents had very kindly brought to share.
Whilst Infant Sports Day was taking place, class 5D shared their class assembly with the Reception and Junior students. The class very eloquently described what they had been learning in their recent Space topic, sharing film and pictures of the work they had completed in many areas of the curriculum. Their assembly ended with a debate about whether space exploration should continue.
Later in the morning it was the turn of the Junior students to take part in their sports day. The first part of the competition began with a carousel of different activities for Year 3 and Year 4 with Year 5 and Year 6 participating in Athletics events including the 60m sprint, shot putt, long jump and quoit throwing. Following a picnic lunch, Year 3 and 4 students then undertook the Athletics events with Year 5 and Year 6 participating in some longer competitive races. First, the cross country run which saw many children persevere with a longer distance around the school grounds and then the team pursuit which involved quick sprinting to try and get their opponents out.
The support from parents, staff and peers was amazing and there were some very exciting races towards the end, but after totaling the points Dao house (blue) triumphed at the winners of the Junior Sports Day.
The day was a total success and all of our students taking part should be incredibly proud of themselves. It was visible to see many of them pushing themselves that little bit more to run faster, or throw further and each and every student should be commended on the support they gave to their fellow team mates. I would also like to say a huge thank you to the PE Department for all of their organisation, the primary teachers and TAs and the Year 7 and Year 9 students who helped our primary students throughout the day. Thank you also to all the parents who spent the day with us cheering and taking lots of photos.
I think we all deserve a long weekend after a long day in the sun today and I hope all of our families enjoy the extra day off this weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, when our Reception and Nursery students will have their sports day. We will also be waving off our Year 4 and Year 5 students as they head off on their respective residentials.
