Year 11 News - 20th May 2016

19 May 2016

Welcome back to a somewhat curtailed newsletter for this fortnight, as the IGCSEs are in full swing!

I have been very impressed with the mature and positive attitude of the Year 11s to their exams, with everyone turning up on time and well-equipped for every session. Behaviour during exams has been impeccable and everything has been going smoothly.

Use of the Media Suite

Please remind your child that they need to be respectful in their use of the Media Suite as a space for revision and exam preparation. Students need to ensure that they are quiet in this area, and that any rubbish is disposed of or taken with them rather than leaving it in the room.

Return of School Resources

By the time you read this, you will have received an email regarding the return of school resources (specifically textbooks, but also any other resources that students may have borrowed, such as memory sticks or SD cards). All of these resources need to be returned to the appropriate subject area and the form needs to be signed off by me. The deadline for this will be Friday 17th June.

Year 11 Celebration Evening

The Parents’ Committee and I have been delighted by the response to the Year 11 Celebration Evening, with the vast majority of you having returned your form and money to confirm attendance. Can I please ask anyone who has not yet done this to return the payment to Amber in the Uniform Shop ASAP? We are down to the last few now!

Exciting Summer Opportunity: Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy is an amazing opportunity for students aged 16-18 (including students who are leaving school this summer), to experience life at one of the world’s most prestigious universities – Oxford. In a two-week programme, students will be taught by Oxford academics and postgraduate students, as well as having exclusive admissions lectures from the university’s admissions office. They will participate in a wide-ranging discussion about issues including international development and sustainability, which will culminate in a formal debate based on the recent Paris Climate Change Conference. In their downtime they will have the opportunity to explore Oxford as well as heading for day trips to London. I am really excited to be helping to organise this Academy, and as of two weeks ago the application process went live!

This course would be ideal for any Upper Secondary students who took part in the Debate League this year, but it would also appeal to anyone interested in History, Politics, Geography, Economics, current affairs, or to anyone who wants to see more of Oxford student life/the UK. I would greatly appreciate your help in publicising this event. There are 60 places available and we would like to fill these ASAP.

A comprehensive brochure with further details can be found here:

And the application form can be found here:

Details regarding payment will be sent on receipt of application.

Thank you for reading and, as ever, do get in touch if you have any concerns or questions. My very best wishes to all of you and a big thank you for your support of Year 11.

Anna Jeffery, Year 11 Leader
