IB News - 17th June 2016

17 June 2016

Last week we watched proudly as our Year 12 students embraced the Group Four Project which is a key component of their IB Diploma. This was a collaborative, inter-disciplinary activity in which groups of students worked together to analyse a common scientific topic or problem such as climate change, pollution, recycling, and space. This culminated in an exhibition of their work in which parents were invited and encouraged to quiz the students on what they had discovered.  We were astounded by the eloquent and knowledgeable presentations put together by our students who had clearly been inspired by fun and knowledge gained throughout the week. Many thanks to the Science and Technology department for all their guidance and organisation.

We then enjoyed the last of this year’s award ceremonies where the IB Learner Profiles were recognised and applauded in students from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. We were very proud to see the following students receive their certificates:

Inquirer – Anna Natalia Pardali Moustakas

Knowledgeable – Yubin Lee

Open-minded – Mathilde Venet

Thinker – Giorgio Wu

Communicator – Mathilda Phirri

Principled – Jessica Milsom

Balanced – Antoni Glinka

Reflective – Oleg Grunda

Caring – Saveliy Korolkov

Risk – Taker – Pelle Raaen

We look forward to the Core Week next week in which we will be doing a CAS review and looking at planning for next year. Students will finalise their EE research proposals and make sure that they are ready to execute them. The goal is to make sure that students are ready to go out into the summer, fully equipped and prepared to finalise their research. They will be experiencing the TOK presentation with a mock - similar to what will happen at the end of the year - and those grades will be used to determine their predicted grades for TOK and their university applications. There will also be time set aside for Higher Education where students will be opening their UCAS and CommonApp accounts, drafting their personal statements or college essays and completing their Bridge U profiles.

In what is our final newsletter of the year (where did the time go?), we would like to thank you all for your support this academic year and wish you all a fun-filled summer holiday full of adventure and discovery.  We look forward to welcoming our Year 12 students back into their final year of school.

Best wishes,

Kathryn Watson

Higher Education

The Year 12 students have all been sent details of their Bridge U accounts which is a Higher Education platform that helps match universities to their preferences. Parents are welcome to gain access to the advice given on this site. If you would like to be included, please send me an email at and I can add.

Year 13 students should ensure that they have responded to UCAS if they have applied to study in the UK after graduation detailing their first and insurance choices.
