Message from Primary - 17th February

17 February 2017

Dear Parents,

It has been a busy week in Early Years and Primary with lots of opportunities to share what is happening at school with our parents.

This week we held two workshops; one aimed at our Early Years parents, in which Mrs Downs and Mrs Keenan discussed with parents how we develop the children’s fine motor skills in preparation for writing. Parents even had the opportunity themselves to take part in activities such as Dough Disco and Squiggle while you Wiggle in order to get a better understanding of how these fun activities aid children in their learning and build the foundation of skills they will use throughout the rest of their lives.

Meanwhile in the Primary school, Mr Scrymgeour hosted a very well attended workshop on the progression of maths calculations that we use here at NAIS Pudong. Whilst it is our aim for all our students to achieve the ability to use formal methods of calculation in all four operations, it is essential that they understand the meaning of number, and in particular place value, in order to do this. Mr Scrymgeour demonstrated how we teach our students a variety of methods, all the while ensuring they understand how and why this method will give them the correct answer. Mr Scrymgeour also discussed the need to check a child’s understanding by sometimes providing intentionally incorrect calculations where students need to work out where the error has been made. All of these skills help to build the deeper level of understanding that we want all our students to achieve.

Yesterday, our parents had the opportunity to come and share with our students what they have been learning in recent topics. Year 3 hosted their Milkshake Cafes, as a culmination of their work on their science-based topic ‘Shake It’. I saw many parents enjoying the variety of milkshakes the children had created in their very own pop-up cafes, as well see the work the children had produced in their lessons.

At the end of the day, Class 4C parents came to join the rest of the primary school to see their assembly on the topic of Chocolate. We saw how the students had learnt a vast amount of information within the subjects of history, geography, science, art and international mindedness. Who knew you could learn so much about chocolate?!

After such a busy week, I think we are all due a weekend to enjoy.

Best wishes,

Lisa Passante
