Information and Reminders

  *   Reading books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday. We have sent activities home with the children for you to try with them and their reading books. We are wanting Year 4 children to read at home at least 3 times a week. If you read with your child at home please mark inside their learning journals for their class teachers to see.

  *   Homework is sent on Wednesdays and must be returned on Mondays to be marked. Please make sure you encourage your child to complete it on their own and inform us if they found the activity challenging so we can further support them in school. They can sign up for homework club on Thursdays and Fridays which is first come, first served.

Stars of the Week

4A – Alexander Au for a fantastic piece of fiction writing. He has written using his imagination to make it even better.

4B – Mercedes Ludwig for some amazing narrative work using adjectives.

4C -  Silvia Jones for her fantastic summary of our learning during our gateways to the world topic.

In our English lessons next week we are going to be continuing to explore the use of visual literacy. We are going to be using a mini-video called “Flight” ( to explore how visual stimuli can be turned into written form. The video is about a boy who wakes up one day and realises he can fly. During our English lessons we are going to be developing our character descriptions that we have written this week. We are going to continue to consolidate our skills on paragraphing and being able to select a rich and varied use of vocabulary in our fiction writing. Towards the end of the week we are going to explore the use of punctuation and its role in speech, alongside apostrophes for possession and contraction and the use of commas in lists. We will bring all of this learning together at the end of the week and apply our understanding to writing an action story based on a superhero that can fly.

Guided Reading: In our guided reading lessons next week we will be exploring being able to read aloud and perform poems, playscripts and other texts, showing understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action.

Spelling:  During our spelling lessons next week we will be learning the rules of spelling words with the prefixes inter and anti

During our maths lessons next week we are going to be continuing to exploring our understanding of both perimeter and area. We will build on the knowledge and skills from this week to begin to understand the relationship between both area and perimeter. Towards the end of the week we will challenge ourselves to be able to apply all of this understanding to multi step word problems. Alongside this we are going to be developing our logic and reasoning skills by being able to vocalise our thoughts and processes of answering word problems.

Next week in our topic lessons we begin our exciting new topic "What's on the Menu?". Monday sees us have our entry point. We will be looking at different foods that we bring in from home. We will be tasting and evaluating these and seeing which we like best and why. From here we will be creating a knowledge harvest to find out what we already know about our new topic and what we would like to find out. Towards the end of the week we will be looking at what our favourite restaurants are and why. From here we will be becoming geographers and looking at where our favourite foods come from. We will mark these on maps with the help of atlas and look at how far food travels to get to us here in Shanghai.
