Message from Primary - 24th March

24 March 2017

Dear Parents,

What a super week we have had in Early Years and Primary this week. Shakespeare Week has been a definite hit with the children and staff and there have been lots of wonderful activities taking place.

  • primary

All week we have been involved in DEAR (Drop Everything and Read). Throughout the primary school a whistle has been blown or a bell has been rung at a random time to signify the need for everyone to stop what they are doing and read a book. The children have absolutely loved this and have been very quick to point out the adults who have not been quick enough to get a book! It has been absolutely fantastic to see how quickly the children get absorbed in a good book and I think many of them, including myself, could have stayed reading the entire day if we had the chance.

Each day I have also hidden an image of William Shakespeare on the corridor displays – but he hasn’t been up there for long! Our eagle-eyed students have usually found him before the first lesson has started, and earned themselves house points for their great observation skills.

During the second half of the week students have had an opportunity to take part in a book swap, by bringing unwanted books into school and swapping them with books by other students in school – a great way to recycle well-loved books by providing someone else the opportunity to read them. We have also had Obido Books hosting a Book Fair in the Hive during the latter part of this week and all Primary students have had an opportunity to visit to see if there are any books they would like to purchase.

Of course in classes we have all been learning about the various works of William Shakespeare and completing different activities linked to the stories we have studied. I must give a special mention to Year 6 who performed an incredibly powerful performance of Macbeth this morning. The play was delivered through nine scenes which each took place in different areas of the 2nd and 3rd floor classrooms and learning spaces, with audience members moving from one scene to the next. The Year 6 students performed their lines wonderfully well  - full of emotion  - which succeeded in sending shivers down your spine. A big thank you to the Year 6 team as well as all the parents who came to enjoy their performance.

We will have an opportunity to watch further performances later today when each year group in the primary school performs a short skit to everyone, based on the plays they have been learning about this week. It promises to be a fantastic end to the week. Of course, we have a very special performance to look forward to next week with ‘Into the Woods’ taking place each evening from Monday to Thursday. Tuesday and Thursday nights are now sold out, but there are still tickets left for the, very special, red carpet performance on Monday evening as well as Wednesday evening. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
