Information and Reminders
- Reading books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday. We have sent activities home with the children for you to try with them and their reading books. We are wanting Year 4 children to read at home at least 3 times a week. If you read with your child at home please mark inside their learning journals for their class teachers to see.
- Homework is sent on Wednesdays and must be returned on Mondays to be marked. Please make sure you encourage your child to complete it on their own and inform us if they found the activity challenging so we can further support them in school. They can sign up for homework club on Thursdays and Fridays which is first come, first served.
- Don’t forget to check Class Dojo to see how many House Points your child has been collecting and to see posts of what is happening in your child’s class.
- As the weather is warmer we are now wearing summer uniform in the primary school. Please visit the school website or check in your child’s Learning Journal for the appropriate clothing, which can be purchased at our uniform shop.
- Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school.
- Please ensure you have handed in your child’s permission slip for the upcoming trip to Metro.

English
During our English lessons next week we will be looking at a new book “Cliffhanger” by Jaqueline Wilson. It is a story about a young boy Tim who goes away to an adventure camp one summer. We will begin the week by looking at the importance of using a wide range of lingustical devices to create interest and humour in our writing. From here we will look at the grammatical knowledge of being able to use present perfect form of verbs in contract to the past tense. At the end of the week we will be applying all of this knowledge into writing letters to Oriental land about our upcoming residential. Throughout this term in Year 4 we are concentrating on using a dictionary to check the spelling of words and the importance of using joined up handwriting.
Guided Reading:
In our guided reading sessions next week we will be reading aloud and performing poems, playscripts and other texts , showing our understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action.
Spelling:
Next week’s spelling lessons we will be learning and practising the spelling rules for suffix ‘-ly’ added to words ending in ‘y’, ‘le’ and ‘ic’.
Maths
During our maths lessons next week we will be starting a new topic of estimation and approximation. We will start the week by looking at being able to approximate any number by rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. From here we will look at applying this knowledge and transferring the same skills by approximating any number with one decimal place by rounding to the nearest whole number. Towards the end of the week we will begin to explore the idea and importance of working backwards from an answer to ensure that it makes sense. This will help us to prevent mistakes in our calculations. Alongside this, we will also begin to understand the process of estimation and how this can give us a rough value of an answer to a calculation.
Topic
Next week marks our last week of learning on “What’s on the menu?”. At the start of the week we will be becoming technologists and creating our own bread. We will follow recipes that we have written, ensuring quality control and baking our own bread. Once we have done this we will be evaluating the overall outcome and deciding if we would make any changes to the recipe, if we were to make the bread again. On Wednesday we will be having our “What’s on the menu?” exit point. We will be visiting Metro and putting all of our learning into a real life context. Please ensure you have handed your permission slips into your child’s class teacher.
