What a fantastic start to the year we had on Friday as students young and old, new and returning, flowed through the building with huge smiles on their faces. Everyone delighted in their review of the vast amount of work which had taken place during the summer and the feeling of being back amongst the community. The hard work of our dedicated team certainly paid off and our staff was thrilled with the response from our families. Our students and parents were impressed with the renovations and our commitment to making the school an inspiring and inviting environment.
Of course, it’s not just about the surface impression but about the deeper learning which takes place. There is no doubt we have an exceptional teaching body; our leading academic results are a testimony to our students thriving academically at the highest possible levels, but what makes us unique is the endless opportunities provided to our students. These opportunities could be taking part in our 130+ co-curricular activities, engaging with the curriculum specialists from our Julliard and MIT collaborations, or benefiting from an academic team driven by an ambition to create socially, personally and academically successful students.
Our IB students entering Year 12 had their first taste of the traits of an IB learner. Already stepping into the IB Academy with some impressive IGCSE results, they explored their holistic programme and visited our new community coffee area, ChatterBox. This year they will collaborate with our parents to sell tasty treats and drinks to help raise funds to support our various service outreach initiatives. On Friday alone the parent community that launched ChatterBox collected over 2000 RMB, adding to the overall success of our orientation day.
Feeling warm and excited to be back is one part of the entire experience with us. The key to following up a great first impression is effective communication – knowing exactly what your child is doing and ways in which they can they can become involved. Communication has another element and that is consistency. For example, we have tightened up our approach regarding uniform standards and set high expectations for the year ahead right from the start.
To help you understand our expectations and ensure a consistent message, we have published this Parent and Student Handbook. A hard copy will be distributed later this week. Please do read and go through with your child. If you happen to be a parent of one of our Early Years students, a special handbook is available for you here.
Another useful tool is our fully interactive calendar. We will always remind you of key dates well in advance, but you can check out any events on the horizon. Parents of student-athletes can view a separate sports calendar where the fixtures for the year are displayed. Sporting trials for Under 19 teams get underway next week so be sure to read the Tiger Sports Report and download a copy of the 2017-18 Pudong Tiger Sports Programme.
It's going to be a busy year for sure but with your support and our continued partnership it will be a great year ahead.
