Examinations & Revision

Examinations can be a time of great pressure for many students. We offer as much support and guidance as we can along the way to help both students and parents prepare.

IGCSE Examinations

In Year 10, our students begin the two year General Certificate of Education (GCSE) course. It is a highly regarded course recognised worldwide. In addition to the GCSE we also offer some subjects at International GCSE (IGCSE), which is as rigorous as the GCSE, but covers more international topics.

The courses cater for different ability levels, with many subjects available for students to study at core (foundation) or extended (higher) level. The extended (higher) curriculum is more challenging and designed for students who are expected to achieve higher grades.

At the end of the two-year course, students will sit exams through Cambridge or Edexcel exam board and receive a grade for each subject based on coursework and examination.

International Baccalaureate Examinations

Students take written examinations at the end of the two year programme, which are marked by external examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in school, which are either initially  marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.

The marks for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay. The diploma is awarded to students who meet the academic requirements, subject to certain minimum levels of performance and their participation in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

The passing and failing conditions are as follows:

1. CAS requirements have not been met.

2. Candidate’s total points are fewer than 24.

3. An N has been given for Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay or for a contributing subject.

4. A grade E has been awarded for one or both of Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

5. There is a grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.

6. Grade 2 has been awarded three or more times (HL or SL).

7. Grade 3 or below has been awarded four or more times (HL or SL).

8. Candidate has gained fewer than 12 points on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count).

9. Candidate has gained fewer than 9 points on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL).

The highest points a Diploma Programme student can be awarded is 45 points.

Revision Guidance

Students are given support year-round to prepare for examinations and understand the best way for them to revise. Revision sessions will be hosted by your subject teachers and it is advisable to use all these extra opportunities to spend time on studying and getting to know what is expected from the exam and completing past papers. We have devised the below guide for use by both students and parents to offer advice on revision techniques and helpful tips on learning and memory styles.
