Depending on the age of your child, homework will look very different. From learning to dress independently in the Early Years to completing research assignments in IB, all students at NAIS Pudong will have access to homework which will also help to develop their organisational and self-management skills.

Early Years

Even children in our Early Years receive homework, although we refer to this as Home Learning. Approximately each half term our teachers send home a Home Learning Menu, which gives parents a variety of ideas of how they can help their child at home develop some of the key developmental skills required in the Early Years.

Examples include:

  • Try rolling a ball to each other or building tall towers together
  • Use your listening ears and name the sounds you can hear at home or at the park
  • Play a turn-taking game with someone in your family such as snap or eye spy

Children will also start to develop their reading and writing skills and will be encouraged to read and be read to at home with their parents. Our children may also come home with some Rainbow Words to learn.

In Years 1 through to Year 6, our students' homework will generally consist of a piece of English work, Maths work and Topic work. This will usually always be work to consolidate the learning that has taken place in the classroom during the week. Topic may be slightly different and the children may be asked to find out about a famous person linked to their current topic, or to make something over the course of two or three weeks. Reading is encouraged daily.

The complexity and the time taken to complete the homework will differ according to the age of your child, and your child's class teacher will advise you on how much time they should be spending each week on their homework.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students receive a homework timetable at the beginning of the year. This is to ensure that their different subject teachers do not all set homework on the same day. Students can expect to receive two or three pieces of homework daily, which extends the learning from the classroom and should take no more than thirty minutes. Students are expected to record their homework tasks and the dates they are due in their Planners which they are given at the beginning of the year.

Students in Years 10-13 receive homework based upon their IGCSE and IB Diploma courses. They do not have a set homework timetable, although our teachers will always try to be flexible with due dates, particularly during busy periods. However, the workload is more than in Years 7, 8 and 9 and students are also expected to complete homework during the school holidays since the IGCSE and IB Diploma courses both run over two years.
