Our Parent Community Association has identified key charities to be beneficiaries of money raised throughout the year through major events and student fundraising activities. The main charities are:
Shanghai Sunrise – Since its beginning in 1995, Shanghai Sunrise has helped thousands of disadvantaged high school and university students in Shanghai to complete their education. We have, over the past several years, sponsored 17 students annually through Shanghai Sunrise with 100 percent of sponsorships going to the students.
Heart to Heart - This non-profit, volunteer-run charity assists impoverished families from around China whose children require heart surgery. Working with two local Shanghai hospitals, it also assists with playroom volunteers and donating school libraries in poor rural areas. Each heart surgery costs 25,000RMB and in 2015 our school community financed two of these surgeries.
Any funds raised in excess of the amounts pledged to these charities are distributed to other worthy causes throughout the year.
Students at our school are encouraged and guided to make a difference in the local community and further afield. The Student Council, as well as individual students and year groups, undertake a range of charitable activities. These include:
- Holding bake sales and other fundraising events for charity
- Teaching English at the local migrant school as part of our programme of co-curricular activities
- Running regular activities, including basketball and art, on campus for migrant school students
- Undertaking service activities as part of Project Week trips from Year 6 through to Year 12. These trips take students to remote parts of China to help with projects in schools and communities in need and may include painting classrooms, setting up libraries or teaching English.
